Behind the Label
When it comes to beauty products, not all ingredients are as clean and safe as they seem. Many widely used cosmetics and skincare formulations contain harmful chemicals that can have long-term effects on our health. Here’s a look at some of the most common harmful ingredients, why they’re concerning, and their potential risks. By being mindful of these harmful ingredients, you can make informed choices and opt for safer, cleaner beauty products that protect both your health and the environment.
Common Harmful Ingredients To Avoid
1. Parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben)
Why they’re used: Parabens are preservatives that prevent the growth of mold and bacteria in beauty products.
Why they’re harmful: These chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption because they mimic estrogen in the body. Some studies suggest a possible connection to breast cancer and reproductive toxicity.
Found in: Moisturizers, shampoos, foundations, and deodorants.
2. Phthalates (Dibutyl Phthalate, Diethyl Phthalate, Dimethyl Phthalate)
Why they’re used: Phthalates help dissolve ingredients, improve texture, and enhance fragrance longevity.
Why they’re harmful: They are known endocrine disruptors that may interfere with reproductive health and fetal development. Some phthalates have been linked to an increased risk of asthma and allergies.
Found in: Nail polishes, perfumes, hair sprays, and lotions.
3. Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives (DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Quaternium-15)
Why they’re used: These ingredients help prevent bacteria growth in products.
Why they’re harmful: Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that can cause skin irritation, allergies, and respiratory issues when inhaled.
Found in: Nail polishes, hair treatments, eyelash glues, and certain lotions.
4. Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - SLS, Sodium Laureth Sulfate - SLES)
Why they’re used: Sulfates are foaming agents that help cleanse the skin and hair.
Why they’re harmful: They strip natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and scalp sensitivity. SLES may also be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen.
Found in: Shampoos, body washes, cleansers, and toothpaste.
5. Synthetic Fragrances (Parfum, Fragrance)
Why they’re used: To add a pleasant scent to products.
Why they’re harmful: The term “fragrance” can hide a mix of hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, some of which may cause allergic reactions, hormone disruption, and migraines.
Found in: Perfumes, lotions, deodorants, and candles.
6. Oxybenzone & Octinoxate
Why they’re used: These are chemical UV filters found in sunscreens.
Why they’re harmful: Oxybenzone has been linked to hormone disruption and potential reproductive toxicity. Both ingredients contribute to coral reef damage and environmental harm.
Found in: Sunscreens, lip balms, and facial moisturizers with SPF.
7. Triclosan
Why they’re used: Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent used in antibacterial soaps and skincare.
Why they’re harmful: It has been linked to thyroid disruption and antibiotic resistance.
Found in: Hand sanitizers, antibacterial soaps, and toothpaste.
8. PEGs (Polyethylene Glycols)
Why they’re used: PEGs act as thickeners, solvents, and moisture carriers.
Why they’re harmful: They may be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, both of which are potential carcinogens.
Found in: Creams, serums, cleansers, and deodorants.
9. Talc (In Some Cases, Asbestos-Contaminated)
Why they’re used: Talc absorbs moisture and improves product texture.
Why they’re harmful: Talc may be contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen linked to lung disease and ovarian cancer.
Found in: Face powders, baby powders, and eyeshadows.
10. Mineral Oil & Petrolatum
Why they’re used: They lock in moisture and create a barrier on the skin.
Why they’re harmful: Unrefined versions may be contaminated with PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), which are potential carcinogens.
Found in: Lip balms, lotions, and hair care products.
