Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yuka?

Yuka is a mobile app that scans product barcodes and rates them based on health and safety. With over 68 million users worldwide, Yuka has become a trusted, independent source for ingredient transparency. It does not accept brand partnerships or advertising, ensuring its scores remain neutral and unbiased. For cosmetics, it reviews ingredient safety and rates each product on a scale from 0 to 100, classified into four tiers: Bad, Poor, Good, and Excellent. At The Clean Edit, we only include products with Good or Excellent Yuka scores to help you shop smarter, safer, and cleaner.

Why did you choose Amazon for affiliate links?

Amazon is the most widely used online retailer in the world, with over 300 million active customers and a reputation for fast shipping, easy returns, and convenience. While clean beauty can sometimes feel niche or hard to access, Amazon makes it easier for more people to find and repurchase their favorites—whether they’re new to the space or building a fully non-toxic routine. Our goal is to make clean beauty approachable, not exclusive. That means meeting you where you shop.

What qualifies a product to be featured on The Clean Edit?

We feature beauty products that prioritize clean, safe ingredients—with high Yuka scores and 4+ star ratings.

Are your recommendations sponsored?

No. All reviews and features are editorially independent. If we ever partner with a brand in the future, it will be clearly disclosed.

Why does clean beauty matter?

Clean beauty matters because what you put on your skin can impact your health, not just your appearance. Many conventional products contain ingredients linked to irritation, hormone disruption, or long-term toxicity. Clean beauty prioritizes safer, non-toxic ingredients that are kinder to your body—without compromising performance. It’s also about transparency. Clean beauty brands tend to be more open about what’s inside their formulas, so you can make informed choices about what works for you. At The Clean Edit, we believe beauty should be both effective and conscious—because healthy skin shouldn't come with a health trade-off.

How do beauty products affect the environment?

Beauty products can have a significant environmental footprint—from the ingredients used to the packaging they come in. Harsh chemical runoff can pollute waterways, microplastics can end up in oceans, and non-recyclable packaging often ends up in landfills. Clean beauty tends to focus on eco-friendly formulations and packaging—think biodegradable ingredients, recyclable materials, and less waste. While not all clean beauty is automatically sustainable, many brands are leading the charge in creating more responsible alternatives. Choosing clean beauty is one step toward a more mindful routine that considers both personal wellness and the planet.

How do brands get away with putting toxic ingredients in beauty products?

Unfortunately, the beauty industry is lightly regulated, especially in places like the U.S., where the FDA doesn’t require pre-market approval for most cosmetics. That means companies can use ingredients that may be linked to hormone disruption, allergies, or long-term health risks—as long as they don’t make medical claims or cause immediate harm. Many of these ingredients are used simply because they’re cheap, effective, or shelf-stable—not because they’re the safest option. Add to that vague labeling, the use of catch-all terms like “fragrance,” and a lack of consumer awareness, and it’s easy for questionable ingredients to fly under the radar.
